Andrey Zahariev is a Professor, Doctor of Sciences (DSc) and PhD in Economics. He obtained his higher education with a Master"s degree in 1994. In 1999, he defended his doctoral dissertation in the scientific specialty "Finance, Money Circulation, Credit and Insurance". He began his academic teaching career in 1995 (as an honorary assistant) at the D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics, rising to the academic positions of Associate Professor in 2001 and Professor in 2012, and taught there until 2024. He has held the administrative positions of coordinator and director of the Distance Learning Centre, Vice-Rector for Master"s and Doctoral Studies, Deputy Chair of the General Assembly, Head of the Department of Finance and Credit, and Dean of the Faculty of Finance. He has directed the Master"s programmes "Financial Management" and "International Financial Management" (taught in English, double degree). He has supervised eighteen Bulgarian and international doctoral students who have successfully defended their doctoral degrees. He is the author of research and teaching content in "International Finance", "Financial Analysis with MS Excel", "Financial Theory", "Introduction to Finance", "Debt Management", "Corporate Capital Management", "Financial Management of Human Resources", "Municipal Budget Management", "Project Financing Techniques", "Financial Analytics", "Currencies and Foreign Exchange Transactions", "Master"s Seminar", "Fundamentals of Finance and Economic Theories", "Financial Risk Management", "Portfolio Management", "Business Planning", "European Projects and Investments", "Foreign Exchange Transactions and Balance of Payments".
He served two terms as a municipal councillor, including as Chairman of the Municipal Council of Svishtov. He is a founder and the first Chairman of the Management Board of the National Association of Chairpersons of Municipal Councils in the Republic of Bulgaria. He has served as a financial consultant for Bulgaria on projects of USAID (LGI programme), SDC and DANIDA. He is a member of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria and the American Economic Association. He has worked on over 30 research projects as a coordinator and member of research teams, and has led Erasmus+ KA220-HED projects. He took part in the Advisory Council on Management and Audit of the Financial System to the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Bulgaria (2008-2009) and in the working groups of the Ministry of Education and Science for drafting the Ordinances on the state requirements for organising distance learning in higher education institutions.
He has specialised at universities in Germany, the United Kingdom, Greece, Malta, Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland, Morocco, Spain and elsewhere. He is the author of over 280 scientific publications, including over 80 in foreign languages. He has been a plenary speaker at scientific forums in Bulgaria and abroad. His h-index is 8 in Scopus, 5 in Web of Science, 16 in Google Scholar and 18 in ResearchGate. He is a reviewer for MDPI scientific journals, including "Sustainability" (Q1), "Risks" (Q2), "Mathematics" (Q1), "Econometrics" (Q1), and others. He has served as Guest Editor of Special Issues of the Journal of Risk and Financial Management (Scopus, Q2). He is Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journals Journal of Insurance and Finance (from 2026), Economic Archive (2007-2010; 2014-2024), Dialogue (2013-2014) and Almanac of Doctoral Research (2008-2011), as well as a member of the Editorial Boards of scientific journals published in Bulgaria, the USA and Ukraine. He has been awarded the honorary titles "Doctor Honoris Causa" of Vasyl" Stus Donetsk National University, Vinnytsia, Ukraine, and "Professor Honorificus" of Artifex University in Bucharest.
Since November 2024, he has been teaching at the University of Insurance and Finance (UIF). Following a competitive procedure in 2025, he holds the academic position of Professor at UIF. In 2026, he defended a dissertation for the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences (DSc) in the professional field 3.8 Economics.
